According to the Oxford Advanced learner’s Dictionary of Current English, Infertility is the inability to have babies or produce young.
Biologically, it is the inability of a person to contribute to conception or the inability to get pregnant despite having frequent unprotected sex for at least one year.
Infertility is divided into primary and secondary.
The prevalence of infertility is increasing world-wide.  It is estimated that one in seven couple have problem conceiving.
In Nigeria the prevalence of infertility is clearly higher.  Over 60% of gynecological consultations are infertility related.  A major reason is the high incidence of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) in our community.
About 10-15% of women in USA aged 15-44 years have difficulty getting or staying pregnant according to center for Disease Control and Prevention.
In Britain male factor accounts for 25% of infertility cases, 50% are female causes while 25% are unexplained.
In Sweden approximately 10% of couples wanting children are infertile.
It should be noted that for pregnancy to occur the following must take place
-           A woman must release an egg from one or both ovaries (ovulation).

-           The egg must go through a fallopian tube towards the uterus.

-           The fertilized egg must implant in the uterus.

Infertility results if there are problems with any of these steps above.
